Happiness and Money

Ravana, Dashanana, Lankapathi. A many of many names and many more words, Ravana had it all- ten heads worth knowledge of Vedas, Puranas and Fine Arts, 20 hands worth power, a city of Gold to rule. He had knowledge, power and money. During his days, knowledge was free to those who sought it, provided they had the dedication, wealth came to those who worked for it and power came to those talented enough to wield it. Yet the combination of the 3 failed to assist Ravana in his battle against Rama. The lack of character cost him a city of gold, his powerful army and finally his life. Money couldn’t buy him victory. This is a very good example that money can’t buy everything. Rama purely won by the strength of his character.

However, the argument that the world has become more money centric is used by many to disprove the above argument. Knowledge has a monetary price and value, and to come to power, you need to have money to campaign in democracy or money to pay the army in a coup. The very fact that everything has a price leads many to believe that money can buy everything. However, this is far from the truth. Working under the former assumption, many people have lost sight of the means to justify the ends. Drug-Cartel lords, underworld leaders and many more have taken the wrong path to achieve their monetary success. But most of them forget to realize that money can’t buy the two most important things in life- character and satisfaction. No matter how much money you have, you can’t buy a good character and no matter how much money you make, you can’t get satisfaction from it. And a combination of the above two is what is required for a happy and content life. And no matter how much money or power you have, if you are unhappy, and not content in life, it is not a life worth leading.

Rich people commit suicide due to lack of happiness and poor people lead a happy, contended life. Due to the varying definition happiness, a person’s happiness may not depend on money. Granted, we live in a money centric world and hence we need money to sustain ourselves and a bit of extra money as a cushion during hard times, but beyond that money that is excess is just money that is wasted.

Money can grant temporary material satisfaction but on a long term, it can’t provide personal satisfaction. That can only come if you have the right character, personality and contentment in life. It is as the Bhagavad Gita says- only your Karma affects you. No amount of money can buy good karma and erase the bad ones. Hence money can’t buy everything.

Nature's Art

Nature strives to achieve perfection. The theory of natural selection elucidates this. Every being that lives with its own unique set of Genes is because those Genes help the organism survive in its environment. Those which are not suited to live in that habitat either migrate or disappear from the tree of life. A bird has feathers that help maintain body temperature even at the colder levels of the atmosphere. Herbivores like deer have a four-chamber digestive system that helps them digest the cellulose in the plant better. Microbes like Bacteria have their genome that helps it survive in its chosen environment. Plants that bear fruits make sure that the fruit is delicious so the seeds are scattered by the animals that eat it. To put simply, evolution is nature’s art, each being is the perfect organism to live in its chosen environment, with each generation slowly changing to adapt to the changing world. Now, we come to Humans. We too are a product of evolution. Our greatest a...

The Light-Bringer

Ignorance is bliss. Who hasn’t heard this quote, and who hasn’t felt it. Every human great and ordinary, rich and poor, the powerful and powerless have all been a prey to ignorance at some point in their life. The British Viceroys were initially ignorant towards popular discontentment in India, the Japanese were ignorant towards the possible response for Pearl Harbor, Alexander the Great was ignorant towards the tiredness of his troops during his campaign, and for a long time, we were ignorant thinking the earth was flat and the center of the universe. There are many kinds of ignorance, ignorance towards knowledge, ignorance towards financial activities, ignorance of reality and so on and so forth. There are so many kinds of ignorance, one can dedicate their life researching about them, but at the end, all can be effectively summed up as the ignorance of truth. Truth is the dispeller of ignorance, the pill, bitter or sweet, to cure you of blindness to reality, to let you see cle...

Illusion of the World

Maya. The Illusion. The great dream of the Paramatma. The source of all creation. Maya is perhaps the most misunderstood concept in Hinduism, with many believing that it is either that the entire creation is but an illusion or that the existence of man is pointless, he is but a tool in the greater will of god, and Maya is man’s delusion of control. Since the entire concept is metaphysical, there is no right or wrong, but perhaps, in my opinion, the interpretation that most suits the concept of Maya is explained by the concept of society. Scientifically speaking, life is a sum of dead things. The cell is the smallest living thing, but the individual components of the cell are each not living. The beauty of nature and life exists in that fact that things which individually cannot be classified as living, join up to form life as we know. It evolves with time, adapting to the changing world, becoming more complex and sophisticated, and becoming more diverse as time grows. A fundamental a...
